Making wine in Pico required a lot of human effort and creativity. The proximity to the sea meant that currais (basalt walls) had to be created to protect the vineyards from the winds and salinity coming from the sea. These walls were only erected thanks to the efforts of hundreds of men who built it stone by stone. A landscape that is now recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site - a unique landscape in the world.
On a volcanic island like Pico, the vineyards are planted in the cracks in the rock and the island's grape varieties are also unique: Verdelho, Arinto do Açores and Terrantez do Pico.
The wines that are born here are full of minerality, salinity... dry and austere! Wines full of personality. Niche wines for those looking for unique tasting experiences.
In addition to the whites (the island's most famous wines), we can't forget the liqueur wines - wines with a long tradition in Pico. Perfect to start a meal paired with cheese or Foie Gras, or at the end of the meal with desserts of dried fruit, sultanas, toffee or orange.
Don't miss out on our suggestions today, and "travel" to the Azores to get to know this very special production.
