Wines with History - The "Talha wines" from Alentejo
Published : 04/23/2024 - Categories : Taste Room
There are two regions in the world that keep the art of "Talha wines" alive. One is Georgia, in eastern Europe, and the other is the Alentejo, in Portugal. More precisely, the sub-region of Vidigueira. This is a place with a very characteristic microclimate where the temperature ranges allow the grapes to ripen excellently and the schist soils give the wines their famous minerality.
The technique of winemaking in talha is ancient and has been passed down from generation to generation in an almost immutable way. These are unusual wines in a world where the consumer's palate is used to stainless steel and oak. "Talha wines" are distinctive wines, with earthy, mineral and rustic aromas. They are authentic wines, not overworked, that make you travel back in time.
As they say around Vidigueira, Talha wine "is made, not manufactured", in an almost rudimentary process that culminates with the opening of the Talhas on 11 November, St Martin's Day. It's a festive moment to enjoy Alentejo music, regional snacks and, of course, the unique "Talha wine".
Curious? We've made a selection of Alentejo wines produced using this ancient technique. Shall we get to know them?
