Selection of BAGA, the queen variety of Bairrada
Published : 01/17/2022 - Categories : Our Selection
It is the queen variety in Bairrada, where it occupies most of the region's vineyards. At a national level, it is the sixth most planted red variety, and examples of Baga are beginning to be found outside the Bairrada region, such as Trás-os-Montes, Douro, Dão or Alentejo. It is its enormous adaptability that allows it to be found in such different regions, however, it requires constant attention in the vineyard due to its sensitivity.
It has often been compared to the queen of Piedmont (Italy), Nebbiolo, which gives rise to the famous Barolos and Barbarescos; and at times it was even thought that it could be the same variety. And in fact there are several similarities, mainly the level of tannins and acidity, both high.
But Baga is a super versatile variety, which gives rise to such structured reds, with strong acidity and tannins, with notes of wild berries and black plum, but also roasting, coffee and tobacco; but it is also capable of producing elegant and fresh rosés and even sparkling wines of enormous subtlety.
On the table it also demonstrates its versatility. The rosés combine perfectly with Asian food, the full-bodied reds with grilled or oven-baked meats and the sparkling wines make the most famous pairing with Bairrada suckling pig.
Get to know the traditional examples of Bairrada, or dare in Bagas from less conventional regions. We have prepared a very special selection, at very inviting prices, but that show the full potential of this variety, and that show why it is a variety of absolute passions.
