Some wines should be tasted once in a lifetime, those who in every harvest gets to the best of the year in most of the National and International wine reviewers.
Chryseia and Quinta do Vale Meão are the best examples, always with great reviews in Robert Parker, part of the top 100 from Wine Spectator magazine and best of the year in Revista de Vinhos and Vinho Grandes Escolhas.
If you asked me what I prefer, that would be a dilemma because both show the best from the Douro terroir, being the Vale Meão a more rustic wine and the Chryseia with a slight French profile.
The first Barca Velha releases where mostly sourced in the Quinta do Vale Meão, when it was part of the Casa Ferrerinha portfolio so you can expect the great acidity and strenght of the Douro Superior.
As for the Chryseia, sourced in the Quinta de Roriz and Quinta da Perdiz and a long partnership between the Symington family and Bruno Prats, it was first released in 2000 and even though the Douro Superior is also present, the French school from Bruno Prats, gives the wine a more light and ready to drink profile that you forget that this is a wine to last for decades.
Both are wines ready to drink, with a great gastronomic profile and that will put a smile in any wine enthusiast face.
So for those who are still thinking about what wine to open for the Christmas eve, both wines will be the perfect choice.
