There are several distinctions between these three sub-regions, the most obvious of which are clearly climatic factors. In general, the climate is quite dry and the mountain ranges offer protection to the vineyards from the winds throughout the region. In Baixo Corgo the air is more humid and fresh, as it still receives some Atlantic influence. In addition, rainfall is higher, helping to fertilize soils and increase production. In Cima Corgo, the climate is Mediterranean and in the Douro Superior it is almost desert (temperatures reach 50ºC in summer). Differences that are quite noticeable at the time of the wine tasting.
