16,5 points - Quinta do Portal LBV Port 2008
Ripe blackberries, cocoa, jam, a slight Bush vegetable, are combined in the aroma. Very well structured, dense and vigorous but satin finish, is a very good level, LBV full of harmony and expressiveness.

The 2008 Late Bottled Vintage Port was bottled in 2012. It is a nice achievement in a lighter-styled vintage and it is immensely appealing. It seems classic as well as elegant and carefully crafted. It is is a blend of 35% Touriga Nacional, 35% Tinta Roriz and 30% Touriga Franca, aged in used oak casks for 4 years. Said winemaker Paulo Coutinho to me, it was from an unusually small crop (40% less than normal) and "entirely made in our new cellar, so fermented on robotic lagares, with the fruity part fermented on closed vats. Like the vintages [Vintage Ports]. Always ... a blend from fermentations on opened (lagares) and closed vats!" Retasted recently, it remains focused and precise, with those well integrated tannins and lovely fruit. It continues to demonstrate its ability to evolve over several days. I'm not sure it is quite as lush as some--in fact, it is a bit compact--but its focus and transparency makes it a wine that is easy to love. Winemaker Paulo Coutinho said to me previously that he actually thought this was more traditional than his Vintage Port.

With its stumpy, old fashioned bottle and cork, this is an LBV for aging. It is perfumed and smooth, with a core of solid tannins and a firm texture. Black fruits and just the right amount of sweetness balance the dryness of the spirit. Keep for several years, or drink now.
