A wine can be sourced with grapes from several estates, from a single estate or even from a single vineyard.
When you narrow the source of a wine, usually the price goes to the super premium range because it’s usually the best vineyards that are used to produce a single vineyard wine and also because the income from these vineyards is so low that the number of bottles produced is a couple of thousands or even less than a thousand depending on the age and size of the vineyard.
Other interesting fact about the single vineyards wines is that the varieties are either a field blend of innumerous native grape varieties or a single variety and usually the best native one from the region: In Douro the Touriga Nacional, in Bairrada the Baga and in Alentejo the Alicante Bouschet.
