Setúbal Roxo 20 Year Old, exquisite dessert wine produced in Portugal on the Setúbal Peninsula, a region south of Lisbon which was recognised as a D.O.C. in 1907. This grape variety is almost extinct, existing only in a small vineyard in Azeitão. This is a purple grape variety, with an intense spicy aroma and a very concentrated and fruity palate. This wine is a blend of 4 vintages, where the youngest wine is 23 years old and, the oldest, 80 years old. Ageing takes place in used oak, since the truly important result is oxidation and not the oak aroma. Fermentation stops after brandy is added. Skin contact for 5 months. Ageing in used oak to increase the process of oxidation. No bottle ageing is required due to its oxidative stage.

Full red/brown colour. Dense and firm with a savoury nose showing lovely old cask complexity. Warm, earthy and spicy with savouriness as well as sweetness. The palate is complex and lively, with sweet earthy notes and lovely casky depth. Brilliant acidity here: so intense and vital with a long finish. A complex, brooding wine of real intensity.

Intense and balsamic notes, smoked, exotic, iodine, stale coffee, cigar box, very dense and intense in a mouth super wide and long. Class, intensity and complexity to a great level.

The NV Moscatel Roxo 20 Years is a fortified blend of vintages ranging from 20 to 75 years old. It was bottled in January, 2014. Compared to its non-vintage sibling, the Alambre also reviewed this issue, this is not quite as sturdy and concentrated, but it has a crisper, more lifted and elegant feel to it. That, I find, is rather typical of the Moscatel Roxo. Complex and fresh, it it is not as immediately impressive as the Alambre, but it holds its own with its sunny disposition, the acidity lacing flavor into the palate. It is hard to resist. It runs around 68 euros in Portugal, but it is not imported. This is very good, but considering the price disparity between this and the Alambre 20 years, it is pretty clear which is the better value.

This remains a classic. The balance between ripe toffee and sweet caramel flavors and the intensity of its acidity is a wonderful source of tension and delight. The wine has intriguing flavors of lavender as well as a dark edge of tannin from wood aging.

An elegant and finesseful dessert wine, with peach and apricot flavors, plenty of honey notes and a lingering chocolate flavor on the finish. Complex and full-flavored. Enjoy. Drink now.
