Some wines impress with their youth, vibrant fruit and freshness. Others reveal their true character through time.
Old vintages tell a story that began many years — sometimes decades — before the bottle reaches our table. Throughout this journey, the wine evolves, develops new layers of aromas and flavours, and gains a complexity that only ageing can provide.
In still wines with ageing potential, youthful fruit can gradually give way to more evolved notes of spices, tobacco, leather, dried fruits or forest floor, while the tannins become progressively softer and more integrated. Each bottle also becomes a reflection of a particular vintage and of how the wine has evolved over the years.
In fortified wines, time takes on yet another dimension. Ports and Madeiras aged for long periods develop extraordinary aromatic richness, with notes that may evoke dried fruits, caramel, spices, coffee or orange peel, while retaining a freshness that balances their concentration.
Opening an old vintage is therefore much more than simply tasting a wine. It is an opportunity to discover how a particular harvest has evolved through time and to enjoy something that can never be recreated.
