Caves Santa Marta is a company with more than six decades of history, located in the municipality of Santa Marta de Penaguião, right in the heart of the Douro Region. In 1959 a group of winegrowers who were not satisfied with the reality of regional viticulture, and because they believed that cooperativism would be the best way to promote their wine, founded the Adega Cooperativa de Santa Marta. Nowadays, Caves Santa Marta is a union of Santa Marta, Cumieira and Medrões wineries. In 1998, the wine company Caves Santa Marta, was the first cooperative to obtain a Vintage, the 1998 Vintage Port. In 2001 it was considered the Best Cooperative Winery of the Year. The Cooperative Institution produces an average of about 6 million liters per year, of which 3 million correspond to Port Wine, it also has 1200 members and exports to twenty-five countries on four continents.
