The Azores wines: Rare, exquisite and the Atlantic ocean in a glass
Publicado : 2019-02-05 - Categorias : Our Selection
The Azores wines are rare, exquisite and it’s the Atlantic ocean in a glass. Rare because it’s a group of small islands where the area under vines is very small.
Exquisite because you can only find it in Michelin stars restaurants and in every specific wine retailers like our store.
And it’s the Atlantic ocean in a glass because these islands lay in the middle of the ocean with all the exposure that it gives to the wine, so it’s expected wines with very good acidity, some salinity and low alcohol levels due to the climate of the islands. It’s wines very different from what you are used to in terms of Portuguese wines but also wines that can’t be compared to the any other provenience.
As for the labels available, you have the Azores wine company from António Maçanita, Best winemaker of the year 2018 according to the Revista de Vinhos. He arrived to the island some years ago and started to organize the few winegrowers in the region, now you can find two red wines from volcanic soils and also the famous Arinto and Verdelho that once were in the table of the European royalty.
A couple of years ago Anselmo Mendes and Diogo Lopes came from the vinho verde wine region to organize the Adega Cooperativa dos Biscoitos and start producing under the label Magma the Verdelho white wines that once made this winery famous.
We can’t expect much more producers in the region due to the low area under vines but we can expect some new wines from these excellent winemakers.
