The Castelão variety is straightly related to the Setúbal region, more precisely with the Periquita wine and for many years the name Periquita was adopted to name all the other Castelão wines in the Setubal region.
An interesting fact about this variety is that some of the best 100% Castelão aren’t made in the Setúbal region but in fact Lisboa, the Chocapalha Castelão Red 2014 and Alentejo, the Fita Preta Castelão Red 2014 or the Susana Esteban Sem Vergonha Red 2015.
In Setúbal most of the red wines use Castelão in the blends and there aren’t so many mono varietals as we would expect.
The reason is simple, the Castelão performs greatly in blends and alone if it’s from old vines because it’s a variety that needs some structure to complement and if not well controlled it can result in wines more aggressive, uncolored and with low body.
In resume, it’s a variety that can give great red wines if well managed from the vineyard to the bottle.
We selected 12 samples of 100% Castelão red wines with prices starting at the €3 mark up to the €20 mark for those who want to discover a great native grape variety. Just click on the “take me to the wines “ link to check our selection.
