Setúbal Moscatel is a dessert wine produced in Portugal on the Setúbal Peninsula, a region south of Lisbon which was recognised as a D.O.C. in 1907. Some years ago, Jose Maria da Fonseca decided to brand its Moscatel as Alambre. Alambre was the name of the estate where José Maria da Fonseca first planted vines of the Moscatel grape variety, and also refers to wine’s amber colour. Alambre is a prestigious brand both in Portugal and abroad. The Setúbal Península has unique conditions to produce fortified wines from the Moscatel grape. The climate is influenced by the Tagus and Sado Rivers and the Serra da Arrábida hill range. It has Mediterranean characteristics with hot, dry days and humid nights at the end of Summer. Winters are cold but not too rainy. This wine is a blend of 19 vintages, where the youngest wine is at least 20 years old and, the oldest is near 80 years old, resulting in a fresh, complex and rich wine, the pride of José Maria da Fonseca. VINIFICATION After the grapes are delivered to the winery the alcohol is analysed in order for the brandy to be added at the ideal moment. Ageing in used oak. No bottle ageing is required due to its oxidative stage.

93 points - Alambre 20 years Muscat
Complex sweet and savoury nose: pithy, with some treacle notes and a hint of old casks, as well as raisiny richness. Quite tight. The palate is lively, dense and complex with the sweet grapiness of the Muscat contrasting with the sterner, more savoury notes of the casks. Really intense with lots of presence.
18 points - Alambre 20 years Muscat
A set of large, intricately muscats aged and blended with mastery, results in an intense and complex wine with fine notes of orange peel and honey. Deep, impressive, endless.

The Moscatel Alambre 20 Years is Fonseca's fortified blend of vintages. Think of it as a NV Tawny Port, except it's not Port, it's all Moscatel and it isn't from Douro. The name "Alambre" was from the estate where Fonseca first planted Moscatel long ago. This version, bottled in 2013 (check the back label for the tiny print), is a blend of 14 vintages, Domingos Soares Franco told me, ranging from 20 years old (the youngest) to 80 years old (the oldest). Opening with beautiful, mature flavors, complex and vibrant, this is laced with molasses, caramel and a hint of treacle. Of medium depth for the type, it remains persistent and lovely, the flavors lingering on the palate.

Why is Moscatel from Setúbal so unknown? This is as impressive as Port or Madeira, a golden glow of sweetness balanced by a burnt, maderized character. Acidity arches over the whole wine, a blend of wood-aged wines with a minimum age of 20 years. Fabulous – try it.
