Winemaking:
Blandy's 5 year old Bual underwent fermentation off the skins with natural yeast at temperatures between 18°C - 21°C in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. After approximately 3 days, fortification with grape brandy takes place, arresting fermentation at the desired degree of sweetness. Blandy's 5 year old Bual was aged in American oak casks in the traditional 'Canteiro' system. This comprises of the gentle heating of the wine in the lofts of the lodges in Funchal. Over the years the wine is transferred from the top floors to the middle floors and eventually to the ground floor where it is cooler. After this gradual 'estufagem' the wine underwent racking and fining before the blend was assembled and bottled.

86 points - Blandys 5 years Bual Madeira

The non-vintage 5-Year-Old Bual is showing a tad excessive volatility on the nose, which rather obfuscates the personality of the grape variety. The palate is elegant on the entry, which rings more true of a richer Verdelho than a Bual. It is very well crafted with light nougat and spice on the finish. The aromatics clear up with aeration. This is a pleasant Bual, but personally I would trade up to the 10-Year-Old.

87 points - Blandys 5 years Bual Madeira

A supple, suave style, with flavors of dried peach, apple and guava, matched to smoky and minerally notes. The creamy finish is long and lush, featuring some dried citrus accents. Drink now through 2030.
