The Altano Reserva is made exclusively from Touriga Nacional grapes, harvested in the Symington family’s Quinta do Ataíde vineyard, located in the beautiful, isolated Vilariça Valley (Douro Superior, Portugal). The Touriga Nacional is the principal grape variety planted at Quinta do Ataíde, accounting for 24% of the vineyard’s 82 hectares (203 acres), making it one of the largest plantings of this variety in the Douro, a variety widely acknowledged as Portugal’s most emblematic. The vineyard was planted in the late 1970s/early 1980s and the vines are now at an ideal maturity, enabling the production of very fine wines that express the distinctive character of the Nacional (fragrant, violet aromas; rich blackberry flavours) and also that of the Vilariça terroir. The grapes were picked by hand into small, shallow containers and manually sorted with great care. Fermented in stainless steel vats (9 and 15 tonnes capacities) with temperature control (between 26 and 28ºC) and prolonged maceration through pumping over. Aging 12 months in American oak barrels of 400L .
Deep red colour. Intense and complex aromas of flowers and ripe blackberry fruits, chocolate and spices. In the mouth it's round and full bodied. Broad and well balanced with a long and persistent end of mouth.
