The 1st of July is the Madeira Day, celebrating the date when Portugal granted autonomy to the Madeira island.
For many, this island is a paradise in the Atlantic Ocean and a place that everyone should visit once in a lifetime.
For us, wine enthusiasts, it’s a unique terroir for fortified wines, the Madeira wines. Highly versatile dessert wines that range from the driest style to the sweetest style, so everybody will find in here a wine for their palate.
The grape varieties native from the island are also unique and an old Frasqueira or Colheita from Sercial, Boal, Terrantez, Malmsey or Verdelho shows a unique profile that will be in your head for many years and among the best wines most people will ever taste.
Madeira was also place for table wines, and you can still find some good samples of rosé wines from Tinta Negra and white wines from Verdelho with the new releases from Madeira wine company with the brand Atlantis and the Barbeito Verdelho.
To celebrate the Madeira day, we selected 12 wines that you should taste and that will be remembered for many years.
