Portuguese Wines on the Top 100 cellar Selections from Wine Enthusiast

Every year, the prestigious magazine Wine Enthusiast launches a list of 100 wines that are an excellent purchase to keep in your cellar at home for some time! These are wines tasted throughout 2021 by experienced tasters and that show structure, power and elegance that reveal an incredible aging potential in the bottle. Those are wines worthy of an eternity.

All these bottles will stand the test of time, of course in different degrees depending on region, variety, vintage…

There we find the usual Bordeaux or Californians from Napa, but this year the list has 6 extraordinary Portuguese wines, with the Douro region dominating the panorama.

In an incredible 5th place we find Quinta do Vale Meão 2018, with 99 points. A complex traditional Douro blend, with many aromatic nuances, with no note overlapping the other. In the tasting it is vibrant, in a set of great elegance, excellent wood integration and a very long aftertaste.

In 10th place comes Taylor's Vintage 2018. A classic vintage where, as you would expect from Taylor’s, the fruit is very fine and concentrated, but the year seems to have given an additional layer of density and volume. Wonderfully ripe tannins that integrate perfectly into the palate, providing structure and volume, which finish with a firm grip. The score was 98 points.

Herdade da Pimenta Grande Escolha Red 2019 is the only Alentejo wine on the panel. It comes in 38th place with 94 points. Austere, with aromas of wild fruits and orange peel, in a perfect integration with earthy and balsamic aromas. Remarkable freshness, excellent structure and balance in a very complex finish.

In 42nd place appears the 2018 harvest of the emblematic Chryseia with 96 points. A powerful, concentrated and dense Touriga Nacional/ Touriga Franca with a strong Douro personality, but balanced with a trace of freshness and minerality. What stands out are the fine and elegant tannins.

Quinta de La Rosa Reserva Red 2018 is in 78th place with 94 points. An old vine gave rise to this red which shows some initial austerity, but which quickly opens up to an elegant aroma of black plum and spices. Vigorous, full-bodied, with a long and delicious finish.

Quinta do Crasto Vintage 2018 with 94 points, appears in 82nd position. Notes of spice and rockrose very well integrated with fresh wild berry aromas. In the mouth, it presents a vigorous attack, evolving into a wine of great solidity and concentration. A captivating wine that finishes in a vibrant, very persistent way.

It is another important recognition for Portuguese wines in the world. Which one will you choose to complete your wine cellar?
